Z-shaped Aircraft
DARPA, the U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, thought of an unconventional shape for an aircraft which can remain in the sky for five years while generating five kilowatts of power for a 1,000 pound payload. That would be the Odysseus designed by Aurora Flight Sciences, which has been selected by DARPA. I reckon that the weired design doesn't appear capable of flight at all. However, DARPA has released a demo clip that explains the whole deal.
The Z-shaped flying wing is actually made of three separate “planes” which can change their combined shape in order to catch the Sun's rays throughout the day and flatten out at night, when the Odysseus would fly on stored power alone. The three interconnected sections would span almost 500 feet. In order to better capture light rays, each “plane” is made of advanced composite materials and double-sided solar panels. If the project is carried on successfully, DARPA will replace most of the US army’s satellites with aerial vehicles like these.
