Ah... probably the coolest thing invented in the 19th century, one that has spread across the Globe, an item that will never die but can be forever replaced - the simple t-shirt. T-shirts, as a piece of cloth without buttons, originally became popular in the United States when they were issued for U.S. Navy soldiers in the 19th century. These were a crew-necked, short-sleeved, white cotton undershirt to be worn under a uniform. Named the T-shirt due to the shape of the garment's outline, they soon became popular among workers in different industries, just like jeans became popular to golddiggers. The T-shirt was light fitted, easily cleaned, and inexpensive, and for this reason, it became the shirt of choice for youngsters and, in time, the world know statement of casual clothing.

T-shirts have also become a medium for self-expression and advertising, with any imaginable combination of words on display, so that everyone can wear the one it best describes themselves. Also, as an un-exhaustable source of combos, the regular shirt has become nowadays one of the best ways to express emotions, feelings, likes or dislikes. Just like other pieces of clothing wore initially as uniforms which only after became true fashion statements, the tee shirts have evolved massively during the centuries and they are now, more than ever, the object of hundreads of designers' work, collections and tribute.

As stated before, t-shirts come in different forms and shapes, colors, materials or slogans so the range is as infinite as the human imagination supply. But from all the variations, the ones that come in hand as the best sellers in the last decades are the slogan ones with messages varying from funny quotes to politic or religious affiliations.

Popular phrases

A popular phrase on the front of T-shirts demonstrating T-shirts' popularity among tourists is the humorous phrase "My friend who went to ____ and who loves me very much bought me this T-shirt" (examples better stated in European countries).

Marketing

Designers forecasted this items' success as a marketing product so in the late 1980s the first designer-logo shirts appeared as a sign of individuality or a certain social standard (it is known that regular shirts can vary costs between 2-20$ depends on various factors, but designer logo shirts can go up to sever hundreds or thousands of dollars). Examples of designer t-shirt branding include Calvin Klein, Ralph Lauren, Nike or the quite newly exclusive Ed Hardy by Christian Audigier shirt collections.

Coolest tee shirts

When it comes to which are the coolest tee shirts in the world, opinions vary; some say that the coolest ones are the ones representing different movie characters, actors or singers, some might say that you won't get cooler than that if you wear a funny quote or character shirt.

All in all, no matter what you wear, a shirt is always the coolest if its worn with the right attitude...or if it's from one bad-ass worldknown as ridiculous expensive designer.
