Pentamaran Yacht Concept

For today’s vehicle design concept I thought it would be better to take a short break from futuristic cars and present something more down to earth (water if you’d please). Check out this speedy yacht.

Yep, we’re now breaking the waves with this fast boat designed by BMT Nigel Gee. The hydrodynamic boat is dubbed Pentamaran and I’s being developed for high-speed applications. According to Gizmag the boat features a long slender central hull derivative of the stabilized monohull. This new type of hull is hydrodynamically optimized without the constraints of needing to be stable as stability is provided by two pairs of outriggers or ‘sponsons’. Pentamaran is actually part of a larger project known as Veloce, and it’s based on a 130m platform capable of speeds in excess 40 knots/h.

Apart from the ingenious shape, the Pentamaran also integrates a sophisticated propulsion system based on a CODOG (Combined Diesel Or Gas) plant producing approximately 44MW of installed propulsive power, delivered via waterjets offering outstanding maneuverability and acceleration. The boat features separate twin 20V8000 diesel engines for low and medium speed operation, while a single LM2500+ turbocharged engine accelerates beyond 40 knots.

BMT is currently testing the Pentamaran, which should see mass production some time in 2009.
