ICON A5 Airplane

Seems like I’m into flying things today. It would’ve been cooler it the wacky guys came up with some UFO-like vehicle, but we’re just stuck with a folding airplane.

The guys over at Gizmodo got some info on a new plane called ICON A5. This is a light sport airplane (LSA) designed for everyday people who, instead of buoying some ordinary car, might be happy to fly around in an affordable personal jet. The idea behind the A5 airplane is pretty simple: make it easier to store and provide some death-free landings.

The storage part is handled with the aid of a pair of wings that can fold up (manually or automatically), but you still require a rather large garage for it. In retracted mode, the plane even looks like a car. Death-free landings, anyone? I can’t tell you for sure if this would always save your life, but the A5 comes with a parachute for the whole plane. So in case you drank too much and feel a bit sleepy, go ahead and let the chute loose, landing you safely on someone's car… mmm head? … I mean house… damn that dog!
