FED Displays

You think SED displays are taking too long to get on the market? I’m not sure SEDs are going to make a big impact, because Sony just announced that FED displays are ready to get commercialized in 2009.

The FED (field emission display) technology was actually invented in the 70s. I guess things didn’t turn out right in those years and people forgot about this technology, but in the past few years, Sony and Motorola have stepped up the research in FEDs and now Sony says we can expect their revolutionary displays to be on sale by the end of next year.

Sony claims that FEDs possess the best characteristics among all types out there. They work in a vacuum much like an old-style tube-type TV. However, we’re not going to see those huge tubes anymore, as FEDs are only a few millimeters thick. Furthermore, Sony has determined that FEDs prove to be sharper and more energy-efficient than LCDs and plasmas, and are easier to build in huge sizes than the acclaimed OLED displays.

As far as prices go, Sony wants to ready the FEDs for broadcasters and medical applications first and foremost, so we might see some high prices by launch time.

Now the potential OLED TV manufacturers will have to scramble to produce a large screen televison before FET does.
