The word “gadget” used to describe a very new and innovative technological device used for specific purposes. The car, the telephone, the mobile phone, the computer – all of them were considered gadgets when they first appeared as they were very new and brought new technology and also people were not used to them. New software applications appeared , having more or less success but only a few of them reached the fame and success they needed to get to be called software gadgets. If a few years ago you could use these software gadgets only on your computer or laptop, now you can use them on any of the devices that run an operating system and have internet access, like the iPhones, iPads , Blackberries and so on. These gadgets are in fact software applications that make it easier for you to use the software and they can include any of the following: fun and games, fun , utilities, search tools, mail and contacts, safety and security, music, movies, IM messages, TV and a lot of other interesting stuff.

But ever since the release of the Windows Vista and more recently Google imrpoves features, the most famous and used and widely spread software gadgets are the desktop gadgets and the sidebar gadgets. You have such a gadget for almost anything you might want to. You can add the gadgets’ icons to your desktop and this allows you a quick view at the gadget images, thus being able to find the information you need by simply looking at them . No need for you to open a lot of windows and search for specific info, as it is available on your desktop, one glance away. You can download and install these gadgets easily and move them around your desktop with your mouse.

There is a weather gadget that allows you to see the weather forecast for a certain location in real time or to see the forecast for a week from today. Of course you need internet connectivity to update all the data about the weather. The images are very illustrative, as you can see a cloud when it’s cloudy, raindrops when it’s raining and so on, together with the temperature in that particular location. Then there’s the calendar gadget that displays the day, date, and some additional info if there’s a special holiday . You can also use the currency gadget that shows the parity between two currencies of your choice, very useful for businessmen and also for people travelling abroad. My favourite is the gadget that shows the system features and monitors the CPU temperature. this way I know when something goes wrong and I can fix the problem in due time. The moon phase gadget is interesting and useful for astronomers and astrologers, but also for people who are passionate about this or who simply want to plan a family outing during a full moon weekend.

These are just a few examples, but there are a lot more and they make computer using more fun.
