Quilting Gadgets
Thursday, May 27th, 2010 |Quilting has been a popular craft for a long time, as it appeared ever since the middle Ages, though some historians claim that it can have its origins even earlier than this period of time. Any way, it first started from necessity, as people needed something to make their clothes warmer during the long cold nights in the Northern hemisphere. Then it extended to bed cloths and chair covers and blankets. Now there are a lot of quilting groups all over the world, but especially in the USA because this quilting craft seems to have revived for some reason I don’t know. Og course women quilted by hand in the beginning and used all kinds of pieces of cloth that had different colours and textures and sowed them together in order to get a warm blanket or clothes. There was even a period of time when they used paper inside the quilt laters for insulation. But in time technology evolved and there were a lot of mechanical devices around, resdy to be used in all fields of activity. It was not long before quilting gadgets appeared, too.

They were first some quilting machines, very similar to the sowing machines that used the movement of the hand or foot to generate the energy they needed for functioning. Once people learned how to use the electrical energy, some people invented the automatic quilting machine, which was quite a quilting gadget at the time but which is now regarded like a normal device. It made women work a lot easier and they were able now to produce more quilts in a shorter time and also to use all kinds of models. Just think at the revolutionary change automatization represented. Think for a bit that before the printing press was invented, for example, the few people that knew how to write spent about two to five months making a copy of a book. The same thing happened with quilting. After the inventing of that automatic machinery people could make better products and also produce more items using the same model. It saved a lot of time and money.

Any way, after so much time, some people that gather in some quilting groups, use quilting as the client that keeps them together and sometimes they even offer support. For example I could find several quilting groups that are support groups for the breast cancer patients. Now they use even more advanced ideas and technology and use the computer for generating quilting patterns and for designing new models for their quilts.

The quilting gadgets used today can be bought from the online shops and include all kinds of devices for sowing, edging, applying the model, rotary cutters and mats, etc. If you want to have some idea about these gadgets or if you want to surprise your mother who is so much into quilting, just visit the following web sites and you will be thrilled to find a lot of useful devices and models: www.quilting.suite101.com, www.thegadgetgirls.com, www.blisstree.com, www.quiltmag.com.
