2,700 Hours Battery Life

Monday, July 14th, 2008 |

I’m pretty happy with my cellphone’s 1 week battery life. I have a Sony Ericsson K800i and the thing is I don’t get to use it use it that intensively. But I’m sure there are many people out there who want to get the most out of their phones. I’ve read somewhere that the iPhone 3G comes with a battery that may last for around 5 hours when using it continuously in 3G mode. That’s not encouraging at all. Luckily, the battery life problem isn’t ignored and in the near future we could be benefitting from special fuel-cell batteries that can last for 2,700 hours of continuous operation.

MTI Micro is responsible for the development of the long lasting battery dubbed Mobion. In an industry report published by the Journal of Power Sources, tests conducted on direct methanol micro fuel cells show degradation of up to 35% after only 360 hours of operation. In addition to the 2,700 hours of continuous run-time, the Mobion test, which is still ongoing, successfully demonstrated a significant achievement by showing power degradation of less than 15% .

“Our test results are a clear indication of the technical progress we have made on performance metrics including life, degradation, temperature, and humidity levels which are required to bring products to market in the consumer electronics industry. To our knowledge, there are no other published results that match ours,” said Jim Prueitt, Vice President of Engineering and Operations at MTI Micro. “With these results, we believe we continue to be a leader in the micro fuel cell industry as we work toward the commercialization of our Mobion(R) power sources.”

MTI Micro’s intends to ready the Mobion battery for use in the multi-billion dollar consumer electronics industry for applications including cell phones, digital cameras, PDAs, MP3 players and other handheld electronic devices. Mobion integrates a 100% methanol feed, passive DMFC technology that has been demonstrated in fully-functional prototypes and concept models in three primary product directions: external cord-free rechargeable power packs, attached fuel cell power sources and embedded micro fuel cell designs.

Plantronics Discovery 925

Tuesday, April 1st, 2008 |

Using a Bluetooth headset with your cellphone can create some funny situations. I’ve seen one too many people walking on the street and apparently talking to some imaginary friend or cursing themselves. That’s because most of the times it’s difficult to see the headseat, but that’s the basic idea, right? No need for the others to see it, it’s discrete. Sometimes, however, you really want to show off your digital equipment and for those of you who want to make an impression, check out the new product from Plantronics.

Discovery 925 is an earpiece which breaks away from the utilitarian design of most Bluetooth ear pieces and infuse some style into the hardware. The Discovery 925 sticks to your ear without a loop that wraps around the back and is also comes with a matching carrying case that doubles as a DC charging doc. Wonder how it really sticks to your ear.

As you can see Discovery 925 integrates a longer design, which allows for a more powerful antenna,as well as an extended microphone that picks up sound more clearly. Plantronics is known for its quality headphones, so they couldn’t stay away from DSP technologies. Thus, they included noise cancellation and voice clarification within their new headseat. Battery life is now extended to around 5 hours and the carrying case holds an extra 5 hour charge.

The Plantronics Discovery 925 Bluetooth headset is supposed to come in pink, gold and black flavors, and will be selling for $150 starting this month.

DigitalRise M600i Watch

Saturday, March 29th, 2008 |

It’s been more than one year since I last wore a wrist watch. Now I don’t have weird tan lines on my wrist anymore. Seriously now, if it doesn’t double as a communicating device, it’s as usless as it looks. But some guys thought about this and they came up with a hybrid watch concept. It might not open a portal to the future but it knows a bunch of other cool tricks.

<-125x125 Button - left->I’m talking about the DigitalRise M600i watch concept, which comes with a host of features never before integrated into this kind of device. It’s actually a phone-watch-player. I’m sure you will find the touchscreen interface impressive as it provides support for phone number and text messaging input. It comes Unlocked and you only need to insert whatever simcard you already have. As you don’t have dedicated keys, the text messaging is facilitated through handwriting input mode. You can record videos and browse on the mobile Internet. This M600i also has a built-in camera, mp3/mp4 player, Bluetooth and many others. It even supports T-flash memory cards and as a mobile phone it knows how to deal with 900/1800MHZ bands.
