Tweet me when my pastries are done!

Sunday, April 12th, 2009 |

Twitter is becoming one of the world’s best known social networking websites and there is no doubt about the fact that its evolution doesn’t end here and now. I don’t know why, but I have a feeling that it will get better and better up until something else will appear in the spotlight.

And if you don’t believe, maybe what I am about to tell you will make you feel sorry for doubting my words. The service has become so popular among people who use the Internet on a regular basis that even bakeries acknowledge the power is exercise on everyone. And if you can’t imagine how Twitter and bakeries can be part of the same sentence, let me tell you that the service can be used in order to keep their customers informed of their pastries.

It might be a good idea, even if for the moment there is only one BakerTweet system installed, ‘cause this is the name of the device, and this happened in the Albion Café in London. We don’t know if the system is going to be spread worldwide, but this is a very important first step.

Designed by Poke London, the BakerTweet is nothing but a very handy way for bakeries to send out messages about their fresh products coming out of the oven. Based on an Arduino board and Linksys Wi-Fi adapter, bundled in a box that is not only bakery-proof, but also very easy to use. The dial can be used to scroll through a list consisting of the baked products and the button is designed to send out a tweet that is pre-configured. There is a web-interface that does something magic: not only it gives you the chance to customize the messages, but it also allows you to add new products.

Unfortunately, the details about the price of the BakerTweet are not known for the moment.

Interesting facts about chocolate

Monday, April 6th, 2009 |

Chocolate? Did someone say chocolate? I don’t know, but I feel like someone is slowly whispering in my left ear this word, over and over again, as if that person knew that I’m not supposed to give in to such a temptation.

We all love chocolate, so I shouldn’t explaining the reasons why I love chocolate myself. However, I’m aware of the fact that eating too much something can easily turn into a nightmare, especially in the context of so many diabetics out there.

But it seems that a Harvard professor, called David Edwards, came up with an interesting idea which gives people the chance to enjoy the chocolate experience without worrying very much about their health. The only difference consists of the fact that this chocolate I’m talking about isn’t supposed to be eaten, but inhaled. It’s a little bit weird, you must admit, but it is said to be a revolutionary way of eating it, so maybe we should give this guy some credit.

This means that chocolate, from now on, will be breathed and you should not worry anymore about the calories! It’s called Le Whif and its inventor said that: “Over the centuries we’ve been eating smaller and smaller quantities at shorter and shorter intervals. It seemed to us that eating was tending toward breathing, so, with a mix of culinary art and aerosol science, we’ve helped move eating habits to their logical conclusion. We call it whiffing”.

Interesting facts about chocolate were discovered during the history, but this is something different, something spectacular. Le Whif is expected to become available later this month in four different flavors: mango chocolate, milk chocolate, mint chocolate and raspberry chocolate. As for the price, it is said to cost $4 each.

Positive effects of ultraviolet radiation

Saturday, March 21st, 2009 |

“Ultraviolet light is found in sunlight and is emitted by electric arcs and specialized lights such as black lights. As an ionizing radiation it can cause chemical reactions, and causes many substances to glow or fluoresce. Most people are aware of the effects of UV through the painful condition of sunburn, but the UV spectrum had many other effects, both beneficial and damaging, on human health”.

People are tempted to consider the ultraviolet light only from a negative point of view, but there are many situations when the effects of ultraviolet radiation are positive. Take the Cole Cleaner for example. This is a concept created by designer Leon Peng that is aimed at treating your soda before drinking it. Perfect for those who are afraid of falling ill, who always run their tin drinks under hot water in order to disinfect it.

Well, this is what the Cole Cleaner does. It kills the bacteria with the help of ultraviolet radiation and you’ll have to be patient from one to five minutes, so that your drink is ready to be consumed. And if you wonder how in earth you will know that the device did its job, well, let me tell you it comes with a purple LED that lights up when the mission is accomplished.

It’s kind of complicated to do this whenever you’re in the mood to drink a soda, but if you want to see the positive effects of ultraviolet radiation on the Cole Cleaner, you’ll just have to give this device a chance!

Boiling an egg was never easier

Saturday, March 14th, 2009 |

I remember that when I was a little child I used to eat much more things that I do now, maybe because I didn’t know very well what I was eating. As the time passed by, I started to give up on lots of aliments and I ended up with limited possibilities. I’m not squeamish, but I just can’t stand some tastes and smells and I do my best when it comes to avoiding them.

For example, I can’t eat eggs, no matter how they’re cooked. And boiled eggs are the worst: the glair is just freakin’ me out and provokes cold shivers that go down my back.

Anyway, for those who love boiled eggs, the preparation might seem the easiest task in the whole world, a genuine piece of cake. And they might be right, but this applies only to the people who aren’t beginners, because if they are, their chance to screw things up is very high. The point is that you must be very careful, if you don’t want them to boil longer that they should.

In order to avoid such a problem, there was a brand new kitchen gadget invented, called the BeepEgg Timer, which comes with a musical solution. If you want to make this device work, then you should put it in the water, along with your eggs. The timer is equipped with several songs that correspond to different stages of a boiling egg. When, for example, the egg is soft-boiled, you’ll be hearing the “Killing me softly” song. If you want your BeepEgg to shut up, the only thing you should do is to just remove it from the hot water and put it in cold water.

The device can be purchased from Firebox for £15 (approximately $21).

T-Man Tea Strainer

Sunday, March 8th, 2009 |

I’ve been thinking about tea, tea houses and the ceremony of tea very much these days, maybe because I’m very passionate about this magic beverage. Here in the town I’m living since more than five years the tea is very appreciated, but what I would like very much is for it to go to the next level, if I may say so, in my homeland also.

And my, oh my, what a coincidence! After I spent so many days thinking about tea, I now have the chance to read something about it. This isn’t what you can easily call a gadget, ‘cause some would disagree, but the T-Man tea strainer look pretty nice.

<-300x250 Medium Rectangle - center->

Designed by Jeewon Jung for the British people, very well known as tea lovers, you can throw the little man in the boiling cup water and let him “drown”. Ok, maybe you shouldn’t let him drown, after all the T-Man has done nothing to you, but you should leave him there up until the moment you have your tea brewed.

The T-man Tea Strainer looks more like a ghost, but you shouldn’t care very much about this aspect, as long as you’ll have your five o’clock tea ready when the time comes. The design is actually cool, but, unfortunately, it’s just a concept at the moment, which means we’ll have to satisfy ourselves with regular strainers.
