How To Be The Coolest Goth
Tuesday, June 1st, 2010 |We all listen to music and watch movies and sometimes we see some character like that interesting NCIS forensic Abby, all dressed in black, with pig tails and crimson lipstick and we immediately think of her as a Goth. But what does this really mean? Well, Goths are those who love the Goth style and music, the followers of the Goth subculture. It appeared some time in the 1980s in Great Britain and was initiated by the Post-Punk followers.

Soon some other music styles came, too, and the fans started wearing goth clothes. this soon turned into a real fashion and it has lasted longer than anyone would expect. There still are a lot of Goth teenagers and artists, listening to dark music and wearing dark clothes and strange make-up. Most of the times they also associate their style with vampires and blood and pale faces. If you want to know how to be the coolest Goth, you must find a way to combine all the elements that define the Goth style and subculture and make them somehow personal, to also define you, your personality.
The Goth style in fashion is a combination of medieval style, Victorian and Rennaissance dresses and also black leather, piercing, dark make-up around the eyes, definitely black hair and a special hair-do. Long dresses or short veiled skirts , leather pants with holes or net stoking are all perfect for an authentic Goth girl. The material at choice is black veil, lace or even leather, all kinds of metal jewelery and spiky accessories.

You may choose the quite unhappy character of a black widow or the crazy style of Marylin Manson – they are both perfectly illustrative for a Goth. Or you may watch Adams Family if you want some inspiration about how to be the coolest Goth. But my advice is to listen to the music that defines this current and try to choose the clothes that define you best, because being a Goth is more than just wanting to copy some crazy guys who wear black and crazy accessories.
In this case you would be just a cheap imitation and not yourself. Being a Goth means first of all having some brains and being different than others, choosing your own personal style. It’s not simply wanting to be a rebel without a cause, but a matter of taste. Goth people do not judge others and take them as they are, do not care about other people being judgmental about them and they only do what they like. It’s a way of saying “I am free to do whatever I want” (within reasonable limits – I dare add). Goth people read and know a lot of stories and myths, are smart and above the average or at least this is the typology presented so far by movies and books.

I like Goth characters and everything that shows personality and style, but I just hate people who want to be Goth because this is cool, not knowing anything about it – music or history, just fake imitators.
