Steamboy’s gadgets

I am sure you have all heard of Akira that is considered a representative image of the Japanese anime. Well, its creator, Katshuiro Otomo, thought about taking things a bit further and directed another unusual and chaotic anime movie called Steamboy in 2004. It was produced by Sunrise and it is considered to be the most expensive anime production ever made, even thought the box office success was not that great. Teenagers are the targeted public and that is why the movie is full of cliches that are considered to attract this share of the audience.

The plot of the action is situated somewhere in 1866 England, which explains the use of steam gadgets and machines. Let’s remember that at that moment England was in the middle of the Industrial Revolution and the steam engine had just been invented, making all things possible now and replacing the energy of many people with the energy of a machine. Actually all Steamboy’s gadgets rely mainly on the steam powerful force . The main characters are the Steam family, mostly Ray Steam which is an inventor and a mechanic at a textile factory nearby its home. All the troubles start the day a mysterious packeage arives and there is a box with a strange ball shaped gadget inside which they call “the steamball” . Apparently the package had been sent from Alaska by the kid’s grandfather who was there with his son, trying to prevent a disaster.

Any way, the main idea is that this ball is used as Steamboy’s main weapon and is able to do lots of unusual things which usually end up by saving the planet or saving people’s lives. Steamboy’s gadgets are all depending on steam to work and are pretty innovative. They are descibed as well as possible in the anime movie with the obvious purpose of making it more veridic and giving it a shade of authenticity, which is pretty nice and a breath of fresh air after the audience was used to all those fantastic stuff in Superman and Spiderman.

Some teenagers loved it and some not so much, but the older audience most certainly did not enjoy it as much as it was expected. Ctitics considered that the anime was too rich in cliches and tried to hard to appeal, getting the opposite effect. Even the names of the characters are too obvious – the Steam family and the Steamboy in a movie where they all rely on the steam power of a steam gadget – Come on!! The Rival family is named O’ Hara, and there’s even a  Scarlet O’Hara like in “Gone with the wind”, the spoiled girl who wanted everything for her. Historians also complained that the plot does not respect the historic truth and events.

But if you are a fan of these anime movies and you enjoy the chaotic view presented by the director you will certainly like it. It is worth watching just to see the original images and the detailed presentations of the Steamboy’s gadgets.
