How To Make Cool Gadgets

In the next line we will teach you how to make some cool gadgets for yourself and from things everyone has in their house.

Let’s start with a lava lamp – everyone loves lava lamps and to make a cool lava lamp you will need the following things:

-          a soda bottle (it has to be clean and empty and to have a bottle cap)
-          mineral oil or vegetable oil (it must be kitchen oil, not car oil – because the kitchen oil is cleaner)
-          food coloring (any color you like works – you shouldn’t add more than 3 colors, because the visual effect won’t be the same as the one from a normal lava lamp)
-          water
-          Airbourne tablet or Alka-Seltzer (effervescent antacid) – you should large pieces.

The first thing you should do is to fill the bottle ¾ with mineral oil or vegetable oil. Then you must add water to fill the rest of the battle. The next step is to put drops of your favorite colors (food coloring) in the bottle.

The magic starts to happen when you drop one or more pieces of Airborne or Alka-Seltzer in the bottle. You will see that the pills interact with the water and make a cool bubbling effect.

You should continue to drop as many pills as you want for a bigger effect. Now all you have to do is to tip the bottle forth and back and to see the “lava” appear.

If you want special effects you should place a flashlight under the bottle and you will see the bubble illuminated by the light. Use only a flashlight, do not heat your homemade, cool gadget like an original lava lamp, do not put it the oven or on the cooker stove.

If you don’t have any Airbourne pills or Alka-Seltzer pills, you can use big pieces of salt because the salt will work, but not as well as the Alka-Seltzer pills.

You can also try this experiment with empty jars (for example to ones used for jelly or peanut butter). And you can add more nice effects with tiny beads, glitter or anything you find interesting in your house.

By building this cool gadget you also learned that water and oil don’t mix together. Even if you try to shake-up the bottle really hard, the oil stays separated from the water.

The next cool gadget we are trying to teach you is – how to make a 3D Glasses

For this experiment you need the following things:

-          scissors
-          clear tape
-          sheets of blue and red acetate (you will find this at any art supply store or in the supermarket)
-          basic pattern for glasses (you will find the pattern on  http://stereo.gsfc.nasa.gov/img/glasses.pdf  or you can make your own)
-          sturdy poster board (oaktag)
-          clear plastic

The first thing you need to do is to cut the shape of the glasses from the pattern and tape them to make real looking glasses. Don’t forget to cut the eyeholes.

The next step is to trace and cut the lens from a clear plastic and color the plastic in red and blue. After you have colored the lens you should place them on the glasses.

You don’t need a basic pattern for glasses; you can also use normal glasses, take off their lens, and color them. The blue goes on the right and the red goes on the left.

Do not wear these 3D glasses as normal glasses, because they can cause headaches.

The next cool gadget is instant snow – you will amaze all your friends and family with this gadget.

The things you need:

-          Insta- Snow polymer ( you can find on online stores from $4.95 to $9.95 depending on the size)
-          Measuring scoop ( you can also use a teaspoon)
-          2 plastic cups
-          Measuring cups
-          Water

The first thing you need to do is to measure about 5 grams of Insta-Snow powder or one teaspoon and place it into an empty cup or any recipient you want.

The water you are using should be at room temperature or warmer, and you should use about 2 ounces of water and put the water on the Insta-Snow.

The snow will appear and it will look very real. It is very fluffy and you can use it all over again, because the water will evaporate and the snow will turn into dry powder.

Why does it work? Because the fake snow is made from super absorbent polymer. This material is able to absorb large quantities of water and the material’s molecules swell very much when they get in contact with the water.

This cool gadget can be perfect for holiday decoration, it looks like real snow but it doesn’t melt like the real one, so it is reusable and long-lasting.

This fake snow also feels cold to the touch – this happens because the water is starting to evaporate and it produces a cooling effect. So this snow, not actually look like the real one but feels like the real one.

The snow last for a few days and then starts to dehydrate and if you want to have snow again, all you have to do is to spay some water on it and the snow will look like before.

This snow can be used on any surface that doesn’t get damaged by water, you can use it on glass, plastic or tile. You can also add a color effect to the snow, if you would like to have blue or red snow, just add a food coloring in the water before use it with the snow and you will have a special snow for the holidays.
