Exchanging information with the ring on your finger

People are different, excellently different, if I might say so. And their memory works in consequence. Some people bear in mind all sorts of information, whether significant or not. Some, on the other hand, can’t remember elementary stuff, like the names of people they’ve just met, numbers, addresses or routes leading to places they’ve been to for so many times.

I hate running into a person I’ve met on a certain occasion, some time ago, and finding myself in the position of having to introduce myself, once again, because the person didn’t bother to remember my name.

Well then, that’s why I love, on the other hand, writing about futuristic concept technology that everyone needs in the present. Moreover, this is the reason why I love this Ring ID. I have to mention that Ring ID isn’t the name of the device, as New York and Tokyo-based designer Hideaki Matsui didn’t officially named his concept product yet, but I had to name it somehow. This is the winning-work of “Nomad” Taiwan International Design Competition 2008.

But how does this wacky thing work? The concept is based on the necessity of managing and saving the information about the person that you just met. So, you have this ring and you store on it your personal information, such as email address, website, or even your phone number and address, if you want to get really personal.

The really cool part is that when you shake hands with someone else, also wearing the Ring ID, the rings on the fingers get close enough to operate so they begin to download all basic information about the ring owner. This ring works on both sides, so people exchange the information they’ve formerly provided. Then you can download the new info onto your computer on you Contacts list.

You have to agree that this is one hell of a device, which would have helped you in the past, when you had to meet dozens of new people. And when it came to getting in touch with them, you had to rummage in the great number of business cards you have on your desk. The Ring ID is still a concept at the moment, but wouldn’t you like to have one of these for yourself? I bet it would be a great help!

Non Stop Top spins right round like a record

Remember when you were a little kid and loved to play with spinning tops? You couldn’t understand why that little thing had to stop and all you wanted was to spin it faster, and faster, and faster, until the end of time. But there was no way for something like this to happen, because, indeed, spinning tops are fun: they spin a bit, wobble and then in fairly short order fall over, as if they got tired and lost their entire energy. Mission accomplished. Don’t tell me you wanted more!

However, there might be a solution to your childish desire, there might be a way to keep those spinning tops spinning, mesmerically whirling round flashing out a psychedelic rainbow of light. It would, of course, be cool, but it seems like an impossible request addressed to a pink little top. Well, you’d be surprised to find out that the Non Stop Top never stops spinning. At least not until the battery gets exhausted. The only thing this device needs is a gentle push, and then you can watch in amusement as the amazing top picks up speed on its own and keeps its balance defying physics gravity and logic.

And it spins, it spins, not for a minute or two, not for an hour, but for up to eight hours. And even if you might want to make it stop, it won’t. Add to this a light show that morphs from one color and pattern to the next. The Non Stop Top it’s bright enough to fill your room with colorful patterns of spinning light. Admit it, this is like no other top you’ve ever played with.

But what keeps this top spinning? Well, there’s a built-in electronics that auto stabilize the top once it’s in motion and then an internal gravity engine takes over to maintain the spinning speed for hours. These tops are provided with a self-correcting technology to spin for extra-long amounts of time. Addictive, mesmeric, maybe silly, and strangely not as impossible as you’d have thought.

Even if the top is suitable for ages 3 years+ and manufacturers didn’t think of you, all of the grown ups out there, when they’ve designed this, you can grab one of these devices for $19. Now, simply put the top on a flat surface, spin it clockwise and watch the LED lights create a fabulous spinning light show. Just like old times, isn’t it?

Temperature Sweater tells you if he gives you fever

Whenever you feel like being in a burning fever, the first thing you’re tempted to do is to actually go grab a thermometer in order to find out whether you have reasons to worry about or not. This is the first step in healing yourself in such a situation, but you have to wait a couple of minutes until you find out if there’s a problem with your temperature, so that you can proceed to cure it. This is the best scenario. But imagine you don’t have the instrument and you’ll have to resort to kitchen physic to set you up.

What do you say about a temperature sweater in your wardrobe? Don’t laugh at my words, because I’m not kidding you. I’m talking about an awesome fleece sweater from the design group Studio 5050 that’s created to give you the information about how hot or cold it is wherever you are. Studio 5050 is a multidisciplinary design studio located in New York and it’s led by designer Despina Papadopoulus, which is also the founder. The studio explores the fast-paced and increasingly ubiquitous connections between design, fashion and technology and converts clothing and accessories into the perfect mixture between the style of an artist and the technological sense of an electrical engineer.

Even if at a first glance it looks like a regular fleece sweater, it has a huge dose of technology on board than any other piece of clothing. The temperature sweater features a radiant yet discreet LED temperature-display on each sleeve and integrated thermometers. One sleeve gives the temperature in Fahrenheit, while the other in Celsius.

The sweater’s cut embraces the body from all sides, a cozy version of the armor and a sexy version of fleece. It is made of two interlocking panels and mimics early construction techniques where loom widths dictate the rules of construction and design. Successfully combining old and new and adding a bit of humor, the temperature sweater is undoubtedly a warm must-have addition to the wardrobe.

The Temperature Sweater’s price is $470 and can be purchased from Studio 5050’s official website, two weeks being required for delivery.

Carcade soothes your kid on your backseat

Friday, October 10th, 2008 |

<-125x125 Button - left->
Remember when you were a kid and your parents took you in those multi-hour car trips you hated so much because for a couple of weeks or so you had to enjoy their company and their company only, losing touch with all of your friends? And this wasn’t your only suffering, because you had to stand still in the backseat, all alone, having nothing to do in order to entertain yourself, as your mother didn’t approve of how you used to understand the concept of “having fun”. So you had to tolerate your father’s lousy taste in music and guessing games, and wait for you to actually be bored to death.

Wouldn’t you have loved to be a little child today, when kids have tons of high-tech entertainment to keep them sedated? And if you thought you’ve seen it all, well let me break the news for you: you haven’t, because a brand new cool-looking car-based video game is about to come out. Now tell me, isn’t it envy what you feel when seeing full console games in cars, which weren’t available when you were a kid?

It appears that a few students at Berlin University of Arts are taking backseat video games to a new level with the new Carcade. Created by Andreas Nicolas Fischer, Martin Kim Luge and Korbinian Polk, Carcade seems to be the possibility to never-ending games, with the potential to shut up children doing long-distance car travels. Designers described the device as “a concept for an in-car video game for the passengers, which captures the landscape and uses it as a video game environment. Existing objects, for example trees and architecture are recognized by the camera and enhanced by video game assets”.

This Carcade game uses a webcam attached to the side of the car and connected to an ordinary laptop in order to scan buildings and trees the car is passing by and make them part of the game. The player has to maneuver a spaceship and collect points while trying to avoid crashing into oncoming enemies. Best of all, these guys implemented a two-player game mode, so that Carcade wouldn’t become subject of war for little brothers.

The game is influenced by the manner of driving the car. This means that if the diver accelerates, the game becomes increasingly difficult. When the car comes to a stop, a different game situation evolves. Hopefully, the connection between the speed of the car and the difficulty of the game won’t be the reason for more accidents, as parents try to shut up their kids while they’re screaming at the top of their lungs “drive faster, mommy, drive faster, I have to improve my game!”.

There is no word about this project turning into reality, yet. But who knows, maybe a big video game manufacturer will reach a critical point of despair and will hit the device to mass production, after seeing this demo.
