Every page was a work of art and all the letters that began a book were so nicely painted and embellished, that they hardly looked like a letter.

They were really stylized, with many additional features that made them look like real jewels. It is true that back then there were very few people who knew how to write, so they were very careful about their writing, showing it an unusual importance. It was an art form to write beautifully, not only readable. So they invented different fonts for their books, different and unusual, rare or common, each used depending on the kind of book they wrote. So this art of writing beautifully was called calligraphy and it was very much appreciated at the time.
But now it does not matter very much if you have an awful handwriting because now you can edit all the documents using your computer.
