Surprisingly (or not), Sony has into its portfolio some excellent LCD HD Televisions with a diagonal varying from 42 inches to 70 inches. However, the price tags are certainly inadequate even for non economic crisis time. I am not really sure how to present these products, since it is impossible to show them in a favorite way, but I must take into consideration the design and hardware package they have to deliver. In the light of the current situation, I have chosen to make a short presentation of each model, leaving you, the reader, and maybe potential buyer to decide either this products are offensive or simply brilliant. There are 19 LCD HD Televisions with a screen diagonal between 42 inches and 70 inches in Sony’s portfolio.
<-300×250 Medium Rectangle – center->
Probably one of the most expensive LCD HD TV’s out on the market is Sony 70 inches Bravia XBR7 Series LCD HDTV, or easily the KDL 70 XBR7. This LCD HDTV has an amazing design with glossy black frame on the front cover, and matter black plastic on the back, with small finishes within the built in speakers (grey frames) or the silver “Sony” logo, which is very small compared to the dimensions of this TV. With a height of 1065 mm (42 inches), wide of 1850 mm (or 72.875 inches), deep of 401 mm (15.875 inches) – including the pedestal, or without pedestal, height of 1012 mm (or 39.875 inches), wide of 1850 mm (or 72.875 inches), deep of 153 mm (6.125 inches), the KDL 70 XBR7 weights about 86.5 Kg (or 191 lbs) with pedestal, or 72.5 Kg (or 160 lbs) without the pedestal.

Therefore, you should be careful not to try to unpack it alone, or set it into your living room by yourself. It sports an enormous feature data base, but in the main features view you will check the full high definition 1080p resolution, the seven high definition inputs, the 10 bit panel and processing, 70 inches display with 15.000 to 1 dynamic contrast ratio, the Motion flow 120 Hz refresh rate, and the second generation of the Bravia Engine PRO. Within the retail package you should find beside the actual LCD HDTV the remote control (RM YD024), two AA batteries for the remote controls, the operating instructions, quick setup guide, warranty card, online registration card, online POP, table top stand, and the AC power cord.

Sony offers the KDL 70 XBR7 for $19999.99 price tag, an enormous price even for what it has to offer. The next LCD in Sony’s offer is the 65 inches Bravia W Series LCD HDTV with the actually screen size of 64.5 inches and the model number KDL 65 W5100. This LCD TV has also several good key features such as full HD 1080p resolution, 7 HD inputs, Motion flow 120 Hz refresh rate, 100.000 to 1 dynamic contrast ratio, Bravia Engine 3 and Bravia Internet video widgets. The retail package sports everything you might need. The KDL 65 W5100 has a nice design, conservative, yet stylish with enough special finishes delivering. This TV is a better choice than the previous one since it sports a smaller price tag of $4999.99.

The same price tag is included within the 55 inches Class Bravia XBR8 LCD HDTV (KDL 55 XBR8), which sports the same design as the KDL 70 XBR7. By adding to the design and smaller price tag high features as the Bravia Engine 2.0 Pro, full 1080p resolution Motion flow with 120 Hz Pro refresh rate, 10 bit panel, and the Triluminos RGB LED backlight, Sony successfully delivered one of the best sold LCD HDTV. Within the same price range, Sony offer another two LCDs, the 52 inches Bravia XBR10 Series LCD HDTV (KDL 52 XBR10) and 46 inches Bravia XBR10 Series LCD HDTV (KDL 46 XBR10 for $4499.99). The first model sports beside the full HD 1080p resolution, 1 million to 1 dynamic contrast ratio, Bravia Internet video, Motion flow 240 Hz, Edge Lit LED backlight, and 1080p wireless transmission.

The second model sports exactly the same features but includes a smaller display, from 52 inches down to 46 inches. In the $2000 – $3000 price range you can find several Sony LCD TVs. The first one is on sale from $3099.99 to $2499.99. The 52 inches Bravia XBR9 Series LCD HDTV (KDL 52 XBR9) sports beside the full HD 1080p resolution, a 100.000  to 1 dynamic contrast ratio, Motion flow 240 Hz refresh rate, 10 bit panel, the Bravia Internet video / widgets, and the Bravia Engine 3. With $100 less than the KDL 52 XBR9, you get the KDL 52 Z5100 also known as 52 inches Bravia Z Series LCD HDTV.

This LCD HDTV is a good bargain (from the $2699.99) since it sports beside an excellent design, but also a full hardware package including the latest generation of Bravia Engine, the full HD 1080p resolution, the Motion flow 240 Hz refresh rate, 10 bit panel and processing, 100.000 to 1 dynamic contrast ratio, 7 HD inputs, Bravia internet video and widget, and the latest Energy Star 3.0 certified. The last Sony LCD HDTV with the price tag between $2000 – $3000 ranges is the KDL 46 XBR9 (46 inches Bravia XBR9 Series LCD HDTV). The KDL 46 XBR9 is basically the same LCD like the KDL 52 Z5100, but with a smaller screen and lacking the 7 HD inputs. However, Sony offers a deal for this LCD, with a $2099.99 price tag (until October 31, from the normal price tag of $2599.99). Under the $2000 price tag, Sony really launched several LCDs. Some of them offer great features for less money, while others have inexplicable price tags.

These LCD HDTVs are from different series, S Series, V Series, W Series, and Z Series. However, at the $1599.99 price tag Sony delivers a product that other manufacturers haven yet successfully created, a LCD TV eco friendly, part of the new VE5 Eco Series. The model, KDL 46 VE5, sports a 46 inches diagonal screen. This LCD TV includes besides the obvious features (7 HD, full HD 1080p, Motion flow 120 Hz refresh rate, 100.000 to 1 dynamic contrast ratio, Bravia Engine 2, and energy saving backlight and power switch) at least three important eco friendly features. The first feature is actually the design itself, with the 46 inches display that includes a HCFL backlight high efficient that provides optimum brightness and reduces power consumption to 50% (below the Energy Star 3.0 requirements).

Sony also included a presence sensor which detects if you are in the room or not. In case you have stepped out from the room, the TV will switch the picture off. If in 30 minutes nobody will enter the room (the sensor doesn’t detect movement), the KDL 46 VE5 will turn itself off completely. Even more, Sony included a new switch off, which will not allow this LCD HDTV to consume any power when turned off (because usually any electronic device, even when switched off still consumes power). The retail package is standard, but includes everything you might need (remote control – YD028, two AA batteries for the remote control, AC power cord, pedestal with four screws, operating instructions, quick setup guide, warranty card, and table top stand). If you are looking for a new Bravia powered LCD HDTV, then you should definitely check Sony’s portfolio. Within the 42 inches to 70 inches diagonal LCD HD Televisions range you can find 19 products, from different series, with a retouched design within every series, excellent features even for the $1099.99 46 inches Bravia S Series LCD HDTV.

The prices are certainly not small, but keep in mind that most of the above products have a diminished price tag, since Sony already started the holiday promotions (even if the promotion is only until October 31, Sony will probably extended it until Christmas). Overall, in this economy the key element is the perfect balance between design, features, and price, and the ultimate decision is in the hands of the potential buyers.

Before all the iPod touch (third generation) hype, considered to be a mobile gaming platform, there was a manufacturer with excellent sales within the portable game console. Many say that the iPod touch is not a true mobile gaming platform and I agree with them. The iPod touch can’t be considered a true competitor for Sony Play Station Portable 3000 Series, or even the new Play Station Portable Go System. Sure, in terms of pricing, you pay more for an iPod touch (second generation) but you get more games for less money with the App Store, while the Play Station Systems are cheaper, with better gaming performances but expensive in time, because of the compatible game prices.
<-300×250 Medium Rectangle – center->
The Sony Play Station Portable 3000 Series sports almost the original design of the first version of the PSP. In terms of high lights this game console, allows you not only to play games, but also to listen to music, watch movies, and access the Internet. An important key feature is the excellent LCD. In terms of design, the Play Station Portable 3000 Series sports a nice Piano Black style including a semi glossy cover (it looks great and keeps away the fingerprints and scratches). Also, you get two status LEDs, the Power LED and the HOLD LED. This improves the quality appearance of this device. Both front side and back side sports the same Piano Black finish, with a nice silver metallic looking frame.

Overall, the PSP 3000 looks extremely nice, offers an excellent design, and even if this is a multimedia console it still includes a conservator look. The build quality is excellent, with no flex or noises when pressed. This device sports a solid build quality without any doubt. In terms of buttons and switches the PSP 3000 sports the directional buttons (mandatory for gaming and menu navigation, up, down, left and right), Power and Hold switch, the Start button, Home button, Select button, Enter keys (such as Square, Triangle, Cross, and Circle), analog stick, right shoulder button and left shoulder button, sound key, volume controls, display key, and the Wi-Fi switch. With a height of 2.9 inches, wide of 6.7 inches, deep of 0.9 inch, the Sony Play Station Portable 3000 Series weights about 189 grams or 0.42 lbs including the battery.

In the battery department Sony included in the PSP 3000 a rechargeable Lithium Ion battery with 1200 mAh, sufficient for over 25 hours of continuous audio playback, or 5 hours of video playback, or 4 to 6 hours of gaming (depending on the game played). However, you should always be prepared to charge your PSP 3000 at the end of the day (in case you are going to use all the features embedded). This battery should provide about 2 hours to 3 hours of autonomy if within an average usage, and even up to 250 hours of standby time.

In terms of connectivity Sony Play Station Portable 3000 Series includes the IEEE wireless communication with the 802.11 b, one mini – B 2.0 USB connection (type B USB connection means computer connection), an infrared port (why not a Bluetooth port is still a mystery) and a memory card slot (compatible with Memory Stick Duo memory cards). You also get the DC in jack and the headset jack. Sony included in the PSP 3000 a 4.3 inches TFT LCD with a 16 to 9 aspect ratio, a resolution of 480 x 272 pixels, capable of rendering 16.7 million colors, with a varying maximum brightness, from 200 / 180 / 130 /80 cd/m2 when plugged in to AC, and 180 / 130 / 80 cd/m2 when using the onboard rechargeable battery. The PSP 3000 also has stereo speakers for a better user experience, with an onboard memory of 64 MB, (expandable value using the memory card slot) and 4 MB DRAM memory.

Sony also completed the package with a CPU running at up to 333 MHz (varying speed starting from 1 MHz to a maximum 333 MHz). Also, the PSP 3000 sports a good security with the 128 bit AES encryption (however this is not the best security, a more recommended value would have been 256 bit encryption) from Magic Gate. The retail package only contains the game console, battery pack, and the mandatory charger. However, this is justifiable since the retail price of Sony Play Station Portable 3000 Series (PSP 98898) is only $169.99. The second portable game console from Sony, Play Station Portable Go System sports a higher price tag, but this is expected since is a newer product in Sony’s portfolio.

Also, besides a new design, the PSP Go System brings several new high lights such as Bluetooth support, and 16 GB onboard memory (plus all the excellent key features from the PSP 3000). Sony advertises the PSP Go System as being an endless Entertainment solution, thanks to the Play Station Store opened 24/7 which is a great competition to the App Store and iTunes store, providing a secure way for you to download games, add-ons, free games, and other multimedia files. Extra points for Sony because is the first manufacturer to successfully deliver an excellent competitor to the Apple’s iTunes store. The advertising campaign for the PSP Go System is rather bold, but excellent for our times, “go versatile, go digital, go anywhere”.

In terms of design, the PSP Go is a slider game console. It’s closed design resemblance the PSP 3000 design. Also it sports the same semi glossy body with either Black Piano or White Piano finish. The build quality is also solid. Therefore, both PSPs not only look great with a conservative yet modern design (the Piano Black finish), but also sport an excellent and solid build quality. Basically, all the keys on the PSP 3000 were included on the PSP Go, but under the sliding display. The connectivity is ensured by the Wi-Fi IEEE 802.11 b, the USB 2.0 port, Bluetooth profile, Memory card slot (compatible with Memory Stick Duo), the DC in jack, and the headset connector.

Sony included in the Play Station Portable Go System a 3.8 inches wide screen TFT LCD with a 16 to 9 aspect rotation with a resolution of 480 x 272 pixels, capable of rendering up to 16.7 million colors. in terms of compatibility, the PSP Go System is a true milestone for Sony since you can use it to access your Play Station 3 over the Wi-Fi connection, and enjoy your full multimedia Library from the Play Station 3. The onboard memory, 16 GB is less then what iPod touch 3rd generation has to offer, 32 GB and 64 GB.

Even so you can expand this value by using a memory card. The built in stereo speaker complete the user experience with excellent audio rendering. In the retail box Sony included beside the PSP Go System and the mandatory charger, the USB cable. The Play Station Portable Go System is offered at $249.99 price tag. As you might have noticed these price tags are very attractive. However, you have to be prepared to spend some money on accessories. For the PSP 3000, Sony offers the PSP headset with Remote for Skype for $29.99, the PSP UMD Case for $14.99, and the PSP Extended Life Battery Kit for $49.99.

The Memory Stick Pro memory cards vary in both capacity and price form the 1 GB value offered for $19.99, to 16 GB for $89.99. Sony also delivers some accessories for the PSP Go System, AC adaptor for $14.99, screen protective film for $9.99, cradle for $29.99, soft carrying case for $14.99, PSP Go component audio and video cable for $29.99 and the traveler case for $19.99. Overall, both PSP 3000 and PSP Go System are great mobile game consoles. However, it is wrong to say that they are cheaper than the iPod touch, because the reality is different.

Even if you chose to buy a PSP 3000 for $169.99, in order to get at least 16 GB (while the cheapest version of iPod touch includes 32 GB) you will still have to pay $89.99 over the basic price tag. Therefore, in the end is not about the price tags, since they are similar, but more about what you prefer to buy and own, a Sony portable multimedia console, or an Apple iPod touch. The choice is yours to make.

It is almost impossible to create the perfect media player for each and every potential customer. That is way we have different manufacturers with models that differ between them either by features, design, or price. Therefore, if you want or need a media player such as iPod nano, but you can only afford a 4 GB iPod shuffle, turn your attention to Zune 4; it might just bring some of the nano’s features with the shuffle’s price tag.
<-300x250 Medium Rectangle - center->
The Zune 4 bring a 4 GB storage capacity, allowing you to store up to 1000 songs (encoded in WMA with 128 Kb per second and a length of 4 minutes), or 25000 pictures, or even 12 hours of video (videos – 320 x 240 pixels -  with a maximum 5000 Kb per second WMV with 128 Kb per second). Zune 4 accepts regular audio enconding, such as MP3 (with a maximum bit rate of 320 Kb per second), AAC (advanced audio coding with the entire sub encodings such as mp4, m4b, m4a or even mov) with a maximum bit rate of 320 Kb per second.

Also Zune 4 accepts the windows media audio standard with 320 Kb per second constant bit rate and windows media audio Pro with 384 Kb per second. All your JPEG pictures can be easily stored on Zune 4. The smallest in capacity Zune player accepts three major video encoding, such as MPEG4 with bothe M4V and MP4, with a maximum resolution of 720 x 480 pixels when encoding at 30 frames per second, and 720 x 576 pixels when encoding at 25 frames per second. Both of these settings are kept for the H.264 video encoding.

Also, Zune 4 is compatible with windows media video with both main and simple profile up to 3 MB per second peak video bit rate. You can also find with this encoding both resolutions available, 720 x 480 pixels for the 30 frames per second, and 720 x 576 pixels for 25 frames per second.

In matter of design, Zune 4 is available in four colors, black, pink, green, and red. Just like Zune 8, Zune 4 sports touch sensitive controls and another two buttons, the “play and pause” button and the “back” button. the design is nice, not iPod nano, but nice, with a good built quality, Zune 4 feels nice when used, but looks king of old when looked (very 2nd iPod nano vibe). With a height of 91.5 mm, wide of 41.4 mm, deep of 8.5 mm, Zune 4 weights about 47 grams or 1.7 ounces.

Microsoft included in Zune 4 a 1.8 inches color display with a scratch resistant glass. You can use the portrait mode when listening to music and the landscape mode for both videos and pictures. The 1.8 inches display has a 320 x 240 pixels resolution. You only get two physical ports, a connector port and a combo unit, either headphone jack or AV output.

Therefore, forget about listening to music or watching videos when charging. If you get, somewhat tired of your videos and music, than you should know that Microsoft included in Zune 4 (just like in Zune 8) games and enabled listening to audio books. Another excellent feature is the possibility of connecting your Zune 4 to your Xbox 360 allowing you to create your very own games soundtrack. In matters of connectivity, Zune 4 has inbuilt Wi-Fi receiver with 802.11 b/g profile (the range must not exceed 30 feet).

Use this connectivity to go online the market place and find anything you might need from over 3 million songs, music videos and all sorts of podcasts. Also you can use this connectivity to engage some Zune to Zune file sharing and to buy directly from FM radio stations the songs you might like. Microsoft included in the retail box beside the Zune 4 headphones, three pairs of earpiece covers, and Zune Sync Cable. The Zune 4 battery should last about 24 hours continuous music (with Wi-Fi turned off), or 4 hours of video playback.

If you are interested in the charging time then you should be aware the Zune 4 charges its battery up to 90% in two hours, while a full charge takes about 3 hours. Overall, for only $79 price tag, Zune 4 is a great bargain, it costs exactly like a 4 GB iPod shuffle, and offers some of the features found on iPod nano.

Nowadays Microsoft started to compete directly with Apple, after the last one had a “boom” factor on the market, due to its excellent products released in the last nine years. Although Microsoft is not yet producing and selling laptops or computers, it still has a close partnership with the important laptop manufacturers on the market. Names as Toshiba, Dell and Asus are just a few that included in their products Microsoft software. However, Microsoft is now trying to defeat, or at least equalize the portable player market monopolized by Apple with its iPod products.
<-300x250 Medium Rectangle - center->
Microsoft Zune HD is a direct hit to iPod touch, while Zune 120 is a direct competitor for the iPod Classic. However, if you are wondering what Microsoft can bring against the new iPod nano, then the answer you are looking for is the old Zune 8. The iPod nano was first released in 2005, bringing a flash memory, a 2.2 inches QVGA display and a click wheel. Since then iPod nano has reached its fifth generation bringing a different design, better memory, a larger display, different user interface, video recording, and video playback, and other significant changes. Zune 8, however, was released on October 2, 2007, and was released as a direct competitor with the iPod nano third generation.

Zune 8 sports an 8 GB flash based memory with up to 2000 songs storage capacity, or 24 hours of video, or even 25000 pictures. Microsoft included in Zune 8 a 399 MHz ARM Core Free scale i.MX 31L processor with 64 MB of random access memory. The design is quite similar with iPod nano. It sports different looks, with several front cover colors (black, pink, blue and red), and with a silver back cover.

The build quality is good; however Zune 8 lacks that certain “it” in the design department. On the front cover, under the display you can find the Zune Pad, or Zune’s click wheel iPod, that features touch sensitive controls and two physical buttons, back button and play and pause button. With a height of 91.5 mm, wide of 41.4 mm, deep of 8.5 mm, Zune 8 weights about 47 grams or 1.7 ounces.

Microsoft included in the Zune 8 a small display compared with the iPod nano display. You get a 1.8 inches color display, with a scratch resistant glass. It sports a resolution of 320 x 240 pixels, and it can render up to 262000 colors. The screen provides with excellent picture rendering, and its brightness is sufficient even under direct sunlight. Zune 8 supports all size pictures as long they are in JPEG format.

As the rest of the Zune line, Zune 8 can support AAC files (abbreviation form advanced audio coding, with all the sub encoding available – mov, m4a, mp4, m4b). For AAC and MP3 encoding the maximum bit rate aloud is 320 Kb per second. Also available is the windows media audio standard with up to 320 Kb per second bit rate, and windows media audio pro dual channel with 384 Kb per second maximum bit rate. The video support is also the same as the rest of the Zune players. You get windows media video with either 720 x 480 pixels up to 30 frames per second or 720 x 576 pixels with up to 25 frames per second.

Also included is the MPEG4 format with both sub encodings, M4V and MP4, also sporting 720 x 480 pixels with a maximum of 30 frames per second and 720 x 576 pixels with 25 frames per second. Microsoft added at the video encoding format support, the H.264 with the same conditions like MPEG4 and windows media video. As Zune 120, Zune 8 sports an in built FM radio, with the same features, allowing you to buy directly from the radio stations songs you might want, without having to go through the whole market online purchase process.

Zune market place offers you about 3 million songs, videos and other interesting application. To go online from your Zune 8 just use the Wireless connection. Zune 8 sports a Wi-Fi with 802.11 b/g profile, with a maximum range up to 30 feet. Zune 8 sports a connector port and one AV output and headphone jack. So, beside all this features, what else can Zune 8 bring? You can easily listen to audio books from your Microsoft player and play the pre installed games found on Zune 8.

Microsoft ships the Zune 8 with a standard battery that should provide with no Wi-Fi, and only audio playback up to 28 hours of continuous music playback. In the retail box you will find beside the multi media player and battery, the Zune Sync Cable, headphones and three pieces of earpiece covers. Is the Zune 8, a good competitor for iPod nano? The response is at best subjective. However, for only $99 the Zune 8 is a nice investment. If you can afford the price tag of $149 then you should go for the fifth generation of iPod nano, which is better designed and equipped than the two year old Zune 8.

Discount Gadgets

Sunday, September 27th, 2009 |

Even if all the manufacturers provide nowadays from normal printers, copiers, scanners to all in one product, it is still extremely hard to find a lightweight, excellent designed (not only esthetically, but also technically – individual toner cartridges) color laser printer among discount gadgets. Even harder, is to find a good balanced wireless color laser printer. One of the best device manufacturers comes with an intriguing product, the Samsung CLP 315W Wireless Color Laser Printer. The CLP 315W Wireless Color Laser Printer is part of the new Samsung line (CLP 315, line that offers small dimension laser printer with individual toner cartridges). By adding the laser printing technology and the individual toner cartridges, Samsung delivers one of the most economical printers on the market. Because this is a Samsung product you can’t expect something lower than an excellent design and quality materials.
<-300×250 Medium Rectangle – center->
The CLP 315W is not a perfect cube, but from several angles, you might have that impression. It is stunning, not as stunning as the Samsung SCX 4500W Wireless Multi function Printer, Scanner, Copier, but stunning enough for this price range. The overall design is made out of matte black solid plastic. You also get some small finishes of glossy black trim around the perimeter.

The build feel solid, and you won’t hear any funny noises when pressing the case, or while printing. The design doesn’t present too many buttons; making it more sophisticated under the latest believes that “less is more”. The dimensions make this printer extremely compact. It has a height of 9.6 inches (24.3 cm), wide of 15.3 inches (38.8 cm), deep of 12.3 inches (31.3 cm), it weight a solid 11 kg (24.3 lb), making the Samsung CLP 315W Wireless pretty heavy for a laser printer. On the top of the Samsung CLP 315W you get a single power on and off button and a few LED lights. These LED lights will provide important information that usually is presented by other printers on a LCD display (the wireless connection status, toner shortages, or even lack of paper in the paper tray).

The biggest drawback in terms of usability is the lack of a cancel button, and I think this is a must for discount gadgets. Therefore, in order for you to cancel a printing you have to go through your computer. However, we all know that the printer responds better to a cancel button, than to a software cancel command (it will probably mean a page of printing between the two cancel modes). The paper tray sits on top of the CLP 315W. It is easy to use when you are on your feet, and not that great when you sit down (you might not see, when the printer runs out of paper). Samsung ships the CLP 315W with four cartridges. The black toner cartridge should last for about 1000 pages (for the black toner cartridge shipped with the CLP 315W), and about 1500 pages with a standard model. The color toner cartridge includes three colors, yellow, magenta, and cyan. If your color printing is average with all three colors then the shipped color toner cartridge should last for about 700 pages, while a standard color toner cartridge used average with all three colors will last you for about 1000 pages.

If you are interested in noise level, then you should now that the CLP 315W make less noise when printing color (45 dBA) than when it prints in monochrome (47 dBA). The declared monthly value of the Samsung CLP 315W is 20000 pages. Only small businesses can use this printer without harming it. You will not be able to use any memory cards with this printer, because the CLP 315W doesn’t have a slot card. However, it provides an internal memory of 32 MB.

The connectivity department is ensured by the high speed USB 2.0 port, and the Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g profile. The Samsung CLP 315W is not the most faster in print speed. It can only provide a black print speed of 17 pages per minute, and a color print speed of 4 pages per minute. The maximum resolution is 2400 x 600 dpi. Samsung ships the CLP 315W along with the two toner cartridges, a software CD, power cord, and a quick install guide. You get no USB cable, which means that Samsung encourages you to you the Wi-Fi connection, rather than the cable one. So, the Samsung CLP 315W is a well designed wireless laser printer, with a slow print speed, not so many features (manual duplex printing, and no cancel button), but an affordable price (form $169.99 to $259.99) for its range.
