Atari 7800 Portable

Remember the good ol’ days when Atari 7800 reigned supreme in the console market? Some of you might not remember it (me included), but this console really set the trend there. Sure, that was the 8-bit era, but some good titles got their starting point back then. I’m not much of an Atari nostalgic, but for those of you who appreciate what Atari did for the gaming industry, here’s an interesting mod made by “Ben Heck.”

Ben was requested to build an Atari 7800 portable system and he came up with what you can see in the picture. He says that the 7800 motherboard is a bit larger than the original Atari 2600 console, thus the unit is larger as well, but in order to make up for this portability issue, Ben included a 7″ widescreen. Here’s a quick spec list:

• Rechargeable batteries built-in
• Combination driving / paddle controller
• Weighs less than a gallon of milk
• A/V output jack, like all my old portables used to have
• Black paint

On Ben Heck’s official site you can find out more about how he managed to design the portable version. There are many pictures and there’s even a clip that explains the technical stuff.
