The era of impossible-to-read watches

Friday, January 16th, 2009

Looking at the picture below, the first thing to cross your mind is “not another Japanese watch!”. Come one, be honest! How did I figure it out? But it’s easy: the wristwatch has a particular silhouette, a little bit alien, if I may say so, and it’s quite impossible to read. It’s enough for me to take this wild guess: it most certainly is made in Japan.

Maybe some of you presume it is branded with the TokyoFlash name, due to the crazy aspect, but they couldn’t be more wrong, even if there is no one to blame them for such a thought. The device was released under the name of EIN Cyber Heartbeat LED and follows some unusual rules of manufacturing wristwatches nowadays. First of all, it doesn’t use anything that people is accustomed to, like numbers or clock hands, in order to tell the time. Second of all, it is based on a weird idea that does nothing but to convert the watch into a impossible-to-read one.

The LED graphical display looks very much like an electrocardiogram machine you can watch someone’s heart on. The EIN Cyber Heartbeat LED doesn’t really tell you whether you heart is still beating or not, as you can figure it out for yourselves, but wearing it will make feel like having a miniature heart monitor device wrapped around your wrist.

More than that, you can either leave the face of the watch black or let the display be active all the time, without worrying about the fact that the battery will be depleted. Fear no more, because the watch can be “resuscitated” by plugging it into a USB port. A single charge (the duration charge is of approximately two hours) is meant to ensure 24 hours of uninterrupted illumination.

Hopefully, your heart is strong enough to be told the overwhelming price of this timepiece, because mine wasn’t prepared for such news. $290. Quite expensive, isn’t it? But, after all, what did you expect from these impossible-to-read watches?

One more step to the best ergonomic keyboard

Friday, January 16th, 2009

When someone makes the mistake of telling how wrong you are when it comes to your attitude concerning your health, you tend to become violent. Maybe the word it’s an exaggeration and I agree, but you get angry because that certain someone dares to show you the truth, a truth you know very well but you’d rather keep it for yourself.

And I’ll take my example to prove my case. When people told me that prolonged hours spent in front of the computer will have the worst consequences possible, the only thing I did was to laugh at everyone’s faces and tell them to mind their own business. I’ve been rude, but I had a reason for acting this way: I knew how bad things are, but I couldn’t just admit that I was wrong.

So now my back hurts like hell, my spine is far from being alright, and I’ve come so far that I hate sitting in a chair. More than that, I’m waiting for the moment when my fingers to show some signs of despair. Maybe I’m paranoiac, but repetitive strain injuries are a fact and happen more and more to people who use the computer.

A solution that helps us all avoid this problem is an ergonomic keyboard, the first step to an ergonomically correct position. And here it is the Smartfish Pro:Motion Keyboard, which looks pretty normal, if you ask me, but it incorporates motors that shift the angle of the keyboard and the separation between keys several times during the day, so the wrist don’t stand a chance in resting too long in the same position. The keyboard is provided with seven “stations” the keyboard rotates through.

There are still plenty other similar devices to come until the day we will be able to say that we’re dealing with the best ergonomic keyboard, but the Smartfish Pro:Motion Keyboard is here to solve your RSI problems in the meantime. And it can be yours for $130, from EverythingUSB.

Not to mention the fact that you’d like for it to become something like your future visiting card, converting itself in the most important work of art of your portofolio.

That’s precisely what happened when Tommy Chen, a Shanghai-based industrial designer reached the moment when he had to say goodbye to his studies and to prepare something in order to successfully finish the Design School of the Southern Yangtze University. When seeing this designer’s exquisite device, you don’t actually know from the first moment what it represents. You’re confused, right? You don’t know whether it’s something it can be used for a specific purpose or it’s just a piece of decoration.

The point is that Tommy Chen has come up with a unique device that combines a wide variety of functionalities, such as an iPod dock, a mobile phone dock, a CD player and an amplifier. When docking all of these independent components together, the result is the unusual disc shape that you can see in the pictures. The YOGA (because this is the name of this concept) is a device with rounded edges that is suitable to those who have strong personalities, oriented to modernity, being perfect for almost any kind of futuristic décor that one can imagine.

Inspired by the raindrops that are falling to the ground, this is the living proof of the fact that brilliant graduation project ideas are at the tip of your finger when you spare no effort in order to succeed!

From the creators of the Blue Microphones Snowball…

Thursday, January 15th, 2009

Here you have another two fantastic devices that will make you feel like hopping, coming from those guys who also created the Snowball and the Snowflake. Three cheers for the news, please!

Ok, maybe I’m exaggerating when pretending that you all know what in earth I’m talking about, when there must be lots of people who have never heard a word about Blue Microphones, a company that is well known for their line of USB microphones. But for those who are familiar and ecstatic with Snowball and Snowflake, wait until I tell about Mikey and Eyeball. For those for whom my words are past your Latin, I’m not babbling about some cartoon characters! Not at all!

The Mikey, for example, is an audio recording microphone that was created to work with all sorts of Apple devices, such as iPod 4G, 5G, 6G, iPod Nano 2G, 3G and the classic version of the iPod. The microphone is equipped with three different settings that you can choose from and with an integrated speaker that can be used for playback. You can use the Mikey when you want to record something from a maximum distance of 40 feet, like college lectures, live music or interviews.

The Eyeball, on the other hand, is a USB webcam that comes with an outstanding audio and the most impressive video capabilities ever. As you can easily see in the picture, the webcam is equipped with a speaker that has the shape of a ball and a pop-out webcam. The pop-out feature is a great idea, meant to give you the privacy that you all need. The company says that the Eyeball is perfect for IM and for video conferences.

Both products were presented at the events that took place in the beginning of this year, like the Consumer Electronics Show and the Macworld Expo. If you’re interested in these new products that are coming straight from the creators of the Blue Microphones Snowball, you can find them in places like the Apple Retail Store or Amazon, for $79.99, the Mikey, and $99.99, the Eyeball.

Cheap flash drive to put on your wrist

Wednesday, January 14th, 2009

People manifest their pretensions concerning right about everything they need, without discrimination. They’re entitled to, if you think about it, as we’re talking about things they are going to use on a regular basis. But sometimes they tend to exaggerate, becoming more inspirational then they should when it comes to devices that, by their nature, should be simple and practical. Still, it seems that pragmatism isn’t the keyword when it comes to people nowadays, as they would rather have sophisticated gadgets with less functionality instead of minimalist ones that help them do their work.

In the given context, the new Flash Drive Band isn’t aimed at people who want to be all the fashion, but to those who aren’t interested in the latest trends. So, if diamond-encrusted or Swarovski crystal-covered gadgets are not what you’re looking for, then this one might be for you. It’s a simple black Flash Drive Band that can be worn as a bracelet, suitable to both men and women. Its greatest advantage, if you ask me, is the fact that wearing your flash drive will keep you from ever losing it, no matter how hard you try. And if you’re the type of guy that tends to lose everything, then you will never lose your flash drive again!

<-300x250 Medium Rectangle - center->

A disadvantage, on the other hand, consists of the storage space, which is a little bit rudimentary and disappointing, of just 512 MB. So, if the only purpose for you to use such a device refers to your daily projects, that don’t require too much space, then this cheap flash drive is what you need. Yeah, ok, I agree, it’s nice to have the possibility to store all the files that you want and never thinking about their “dimension”, but that’s the way it is.

This soft band, made of black silicone, is very easy to put on, but it’s also very easy to take off. In addition, the flash drive is compatible with Windows 98 and Mac OS 9.0, or their newer versions. To counterbalance the lack of more MB, this is a cheap flash drive that costs only $29.95.
