Wooden laptop case

Monday, January 26th, 2009

What’s the most obvious proof of the fact that there’s a huge demand for the products manufactured and commercialized by a company? Alright, maybe sales; it’s quite understandable why you would think first of this answer, because when a company sells well, you know that its work wasn’t for nothing and that it’s on the road that leads to success.

But there’s another aspect that should be taken into consideration: the secondary market of the product, consisting of accessories especially designed to work with what you’re selling. And there’s no doubt about the fact that Apple is one of those lucky companies that create sensation with each and every new release.

This is why you shouldn’t be surprised that Rainer Spehl, a designer that “works hands-on in furniture, interior and exhibition design”, dwelt upon the 15 inch Apple MackBooks and MackBooks Pro for his new product. Just in case you didn’t know, there are many solutions on the market for laptop owners who want to safely transport their devices, besides the messenger bags. The Wooden Laptop Case is a unique stylish enclosure that is just a little bit larger than the laptop.

A great thing about this case is the fact that it is lined with leather on the inside, to prevent your laptop from scratching, while the closing mechanism is based on a magnetic lock. But if you thought that what you have in front of your eyes is a product very close to perfection, wait until I tell you how much it costs, because it is pretty expensive, you know? The Wooden Laptop Case can be yours for approximately 220 Euro. And, if you’re interested, the only thing you should do is to just contact the designer.

Best portable media player?

Sunday, January 25th, 2009

Maybe the best looking, this is more appropriate, because, as you can easily see in the pictures, this is a special device with a unique silhouette that is able to catch anyone’s attention. And if you thought that in this new era, which seems to be governed by economic chaos, when people don’t have the means to enjoy every caprice that might cross their minds, designers find themselves in the situation of not following their inspiration, then you’re so very wrong.

More and more concepts have the privilege to see the light of the day, showing everyone that the crisis didn’t affect (at least not yet) the imagination and the ambition of the mankind.

When I wrote about the Samsung lavender, a concept phone created by a young designer, Andrew Kim, the first thought to cross my mind was related to the fact that the technological development has nothing to do with age. Being encouraged by the reaction caused by the Samsung Lavender concept phone, he dared to do much more, coming up with the Soma MP3 player.

<-300x250 Medium Rectangle - center->

The name comes from “somatic sensation”, a syntagm that refers, of course, to the touch experience. This is the reason why the young designer decided to use several exotic materials, such as leather, bamboo, stainless steel, denim and plastic.

According to the designer, the most important aspect concerning this concept device is its unusual shape, a more fluid one. And Andrew Kim gives us the explanation for choosing it: “Everything is square in today’s world. We wake up in a square bed, look out in a square window, watch the news on a square TV and eat three square meals a day. All the electronics in the market share this trend. The Soma breaks this tradition with a unique, fluid shape. The elegant and dynamic curves of the Soma are exquisite but also feel great in the hand. Every surface of the Soma flows into the next, creating a intrinsic and natural feeling”.

As far as the features are concerned, they include: two displays, a large 3.5 touch sensitive LCD (this one is for displaying the key information) and a secondary one, an LCD also, placed below the first one (this one, on the other hand, is used for a better navigation) and an internal memory of 32GB SSD.

Unfortunately, we’re talking about a concept device, which will most certainly have the same fate as the Samsung Lavender concept phone. Such a shame. Because, as I said before, this might not be the best portable media player in the world, but it sure is a very good looking one.

Bedside reading lamp

Saturday, January 24th, 2009

I love reading almost most of the times, even if lately I didn’t quite show that I’m really into it, my interest being somehow absent. Alright, some would say that my reasons are strong enough, like the lack of time or the fact that there were some other urgent problems that needed to be rapidly solved. However, in my opinion there is no justification for me to forget about a hobby that used to make me smile at the end of a hard day.

And I always promise to myself that as soon as I finish with all sorts of problems, I will surely find the time to read the books that I dreamed about for years. And when I’ll be able to do this, I will surely take into consideration the Bookmark Bedside Lamp, a concept design that is quite impressive, even if there might be some to consider it a gadget “for lazy people”.

<-300x250 Medium Rectangle - center->

The bedside reading lamp is aimed to those who are labeled in a way that I just can’t understand, and if you don’t know what I’m talking about, then let me tell you one word and one word only: bookworm.

So, if you are the type of guy who loves spending an hour before going to sleep with a book in your hands, then this is perfect for you. Featuring a simple design, the device is a mixture between a night lamp and a bookmark, being equipped with a protruding spine that allows you to splay the book you’re reading over. This is what you need so that you stop turning down the corner of a book, which I, for one, truly hate.

This bedside reading lamp is perfect not only because is multifunctional, but also because it provides you with the handiest bookmark ever. This is why you should pray for this concept to become reality. Soon.

Guitar-shaped boat, now for sale

Friday, January 23rd, 2009

This is a story about being an artist, living the most unbelievable life possible, having the wildest dreams that a human being can have and, more important than anything else, making them come true. When you’re a singer and you want to stand out from your competition, you don’t care about the means very much, because all you can think of is the fact that you must become famous.

This is what happened with Josh Pyke, an Australian singer-songwriter, who had the crazy idea of commissioning a stunning guitar boat. The weird demand of the artist was more than justified, if you think about it, because there’s nothing in the whole world to catch the general attention than those things that are far from crossing humans’ minds on a regular basis.

This guy converted the guitar-shaped boat into a genuine star, because it appeared in a video for a song with the title “Make you happy”. After taking advantages of the awkward presence of the boat in the video, Josh Pyke decided to auction it off, in his attempt to raise funds for Indigenous Literacy Project.

<-300x250 Medium Rectangle - center->

“Seeing the guitar boat clip spread around the world has been one of the highlights of releasing this album [Chimney’s Fire] so far”, said the artist in a discussion with the guys from Undercover News. In addition, he said that “I love the idea that its charm will now go towards helping something I’m passionate about”.

Maybe you’re eccentric human beings who’d love to have their own guitar-shaped boat or you are generous and always ready to make a good deed, so I’m sure you’re interested in information about the auction. Therefore, the boat is going to hit an auction that is said to take place on eBay from February 9 to February 12.

However, if you don’t have the means to participate to this auction, maybe you’d like to see the boat before being sold, and you can do this by visiting the Australian National Maritime Museum in Darling Harbour, Sydney.

Small MP3 players from Green House

Friday, January 23rd, 2009

What’s the first thought to cross your mind when someone tells you about a company called Green House? Maybe you’d imagine that there’s a connection between that certain company and its purposes, on one hand, and the environmentalist trend, on the other hand. Because you already know that nowadays when something is green, this it most certainly is eco-friendly.

Anyway, the point is the company has just released a brand new series consisting of small MP3 players, called Kana Micro. At first glance, the devices leave the impression that they are anything but MP3 players. USB flash drives, maybe. But the truth is that these cute little gadgets were made for you to listen to music.

One of the main advantages of the small MP3 players is precisely the portability, requiring very little space due to their dimensions. They provide up to two hours of playback time, when the battery gets depleted and must be recharged via your USB drive.

<-300x250 Medium Rectangle - center->

When it comes to the internal memory, the players are equipped with 2GB, which might not be enough for music lovers who are always in search for novelties. The only problem is that the 2GB aren’t integrated in the form of the internal memory you all know very well. They have to come from a microSD card that isn’t included in the package. Pretty disappointing, I agree.

Unfortunately, if you are already madly in love with these small MP3 players, I’ll have to give you one last bad news. The Kana Micro are currently available in Japan in a wide variety of colors, such as white (clear), pink, purple, orange, yellow, blue and green. Not to mention the fact they’re so very cheap: approximately $16. Sorry, but the players can’t be yours, unless you’re from Japan. I think I’ve already mentioned it!
