The Brass Cross USB Drive

Monday, December 22nd, 2008

There are quite a few things that people should never turn into derision and religion is one of those things. I really don’t see the use of focusing on delicate subjects and then converting them into bad jokes. But maybe it’s just me and maybe people don’t take it very serious and they would never think that this Brass Cross USB Drive is some sort of a blasphemy, as I’ve been tempted to consider it.

More than that, I’m sure that some of you would find it a good looking gift for your best friends. It’s just that this weird device is aimed at Christians and at Christians only, because the ancient symbol of the humanity is used in this religion as a fundamental sign.

Still, it’s a good thing that the USB drive isn’t entirely covered with all sorts of diamonds and other bright and shiny little precious stones. The designers decided to adorn this piece of technology with just a couple of crystals and to give it an antique brass look.

The main advantage of the Brass Cross USB Flash Drive is that, compared to any other similar devices that have small amounts of storage, this one comes with 8 GB, which is pretty impressive. In this given context, you will have to deal with the bad looks of this wearable Cross and have it hang around your neck with the adequate pride. This means you will have to make up your mind between looks and functionality.

The Brass Cross USB Flash Drive works with Windows, Mac and Linux and it’s compatible with systems like Windows 98SE / Me / 2000 / XP / Vista, Mac OS 10.x or future versions, Linux 2.4.2 or newer. Supporting a wide variety of files formats that can be stored on the Cross, the chain has a universal size that is of 28 inches.

The Brass Cross USB Drive is being sold for approximately $22 on Chinavision.com.

Another perspective on the traditional mouse

Sunday, December 21st, 2008

Be honest now! Don’t you just love the way your friends make wry faces when trying to guess what in earth they’re looking at, knowing that they have no chance to give you the right answer. The same happens when they see that thing in the picture above.

This is called the Orbita Mouse and was designed by a very bold company, the Cyber E Sport that dared to surpass any boundary implied by the traditional rules of the process of manufacturing a computer mouse. It’s interesting, I must admit, but it’s awkward in the same time.

The Orbita is provided with a dial control which is meant to work as a scroller, a vertical and a horizontal one. One thing that makes a whole lot of difference is the fact that the scrolling is smoother compared to any other similar devices, helping the user to avoid the staggered movement of a usual scrolling wheel.

If you’d rush at jumping into conclusions and thinking that the Orbita lacks the most important two things a mouse is equipped with, the left and right click button, then you could not be more wrong! The two buttons were also taken care of, but they have a form that people aren’t accustomed to. The big button that you can easily see is for the left click, while the right click is the result of squeezing the mouse at any angle that you might want.

If, on the other hand, you’re one of those who love 3D modeling programs and software specialized in music-recording, then you can consider yourself a lucky guy, because the rotation of the Optima mouse acts like a third axis. This way, you’ll be able to easily manipulate 3D objects in the appropriate software. Similar to the recording software that are based on knobs and dials, the Orbita has a circular construction that helps artists to record their music.

The device isn’t available at the moment, but it’s expected to be released in January, 2009 for approximately $98.50. For this amount, you’ll also be given a wireless USB base.

Santa Claus will ride a Porsche sled this year

Saturday, December 20th, 2008

Dashing through the snow / On a one-horse open sleigh / Over the fields we go / Laughing all the way. What would you say if the sleigh this carol speaks of is a Porsche-branded one? Please don’t laugh at me! This isn’t a good joke I intended to crack in order to smooth out your foreheads. It’s the truth, the whole truth, nothing but the truth, so help me God!

For those of you out there who are still waiting for that special moment when they will be able to buy their very own Porsche, I have some good news. Your childhood dream has all the chances to become reality. Unfortunately for you, if your bank account isn’t large enough to cover the price of a luxury vehicle that is nothing but the expression of the most expensive caprices of prosperous guys, you’ll have to content yourself with a sled.

You’re doing it again! This isn’t a slapstick comedy whatsoever, and you can trust me on this one! Porsche has designed this aluminum sled that you can see in the picture above. I suppose that sleds are a very profitable business in this time of year, otherwise I don’t see a good reason for such a company to even bother to design and develop a “vehicle” that is so restrictive.

<-300x250 Medium Rectangle - center->

If you’re willing to give this thing a chance, you’ll see that the sled is far from being an astonishing technological innovation. But it’s Porsche-branded, and it’s enough. It has clean lines, a minimalist design, and an overwhelming price of $490. I don’t see you laughing right now! Now that you’d be entitled to!

Having a practical folding mechanism, the sled gives you all the functionality that you might pretend, and it has what it takes to give you the most joyful ride in the Christmas Eve, even if you’re somewhere around 100 kilograms.

Prepare yourself for this long-named gadget

Friday, December 19th, 2008

I’m sure that anyone who is passionate about gadgets as all of you are knows what Brando is. Or at least, they have heard about it. Anyway, because the market abounds in this time of year with all sorts of wild-goose chases, Brando couldn’t be inferior to its competitors and brings to the public the most unbelievable gadgets.

This one is a little bit awkward, not because of its belonging to the great family of headsets, but because of its name, which is a total proof of bad inspiration, if you ask me. Usually, companies try to be as original as someone can be and come up with easy-to-remember names. But when you run across the Professional Headset – Throat-Vibration Speaker/Mic + PTT Finger button, the last thing you can ever think about is that whoever has the bright idea to give a gadget such a name was awfully uninspired. How in earth can someone remember this? Because, yes indeed, this is the product’s name, and if you don’t want to make a fool of yourself not being able to explain your friend what is that thing you wear around your neck, you’d better keep that enumeration in mind.

The long-named gadget is aimed at those who love spending their time in front of the computer and talking over it, working best with any Motorola Talkabout 1-pin walkie talkie. The features of the device include: in-ear earphone and a small push button (it has the size of a finger). The length from the plug to the finger button is 143 cm, the length from plug to throat-vibration microphone is of 103 cm, while the length of the transparent in-ear earphone is between 30-44 cm.

The only thing I’m concerned about is the comfort of having two pieces of plastic surrounding your neck all day long. Maybe you should think twice before purchasing this $22 device. You wouldn’t be able to remember its name, anyway!

Moka Chat, a multilingual chat service

Friday, December 19th, 2008

<-125x125 Button - left->
A couple of weeks ago my brother asked me if I wanted to help him with a project he had to prepare for one very interesting course called “Economic predictions”. As he wasn’t given a specific subject, he had the total freedom to choose whatever he liked most. And so he did. Globalization; that’s what he decided to write about. Very well, I said, it couldn’t be easier. Everyone knows what globalization is.

And it’s true. This is one very debated subject nowadays, raising controversies that proved themselves to be not only captivating for those involved, but also endless. This is a complex issue, there’s no doubt about it, but when you see the agitation it creates, you ask yourself what in earth is the reason for something like this to happen.

Beyond its global character (as the term suggests), it combines several actions that appear in a variety of domains, including: economy, politics, technology and the socio-cultural environment. The term is often used to refer to a specific type of globalization, the economic one, which consists of the “integration of national economies into the international economy” ( Wikipedia).

If I had this product I am about to describe at my disposal, it would have been one hell of a project. Moka is a company that tries what almost all companies from around the world are, sparing no efforts in order to develop all sorts of new technologies that are able to help people to cross the boundaries between them, whether they’re cultural or linguistic ones.

Based in West Palm Beach, Florida and Beijing, China, Moka released a multilingual chat Service that is meant to work with Skype, called Moka Chat. This is, in fact, a language translation service which helps all of you who are Skype-addicted to chat in languages like Spanish, English and Chinese. The argument the company brought for releasing such a service is that more than 2 billion people identify themselves with these three languages.

This way, whoever uses the Moka Chat (I’m talking about English-natives, of course) can translate their messages to Chinese or Spanish, making a whole lot easier the communication with friends from these two countries. In addition, this multilingual chat service allows users to translate SMS text messages and send them to other people, using an integrated Skype service that is meant for text messaging.

If you’re interested in testing the service, you can use for free during its beta period and download it from Moka’s official website. The main advantage of Moka Chat is that, besides the help it brings as far as the communication is concerned it’s also a very powerful language learning tool.

“Skype is one of the most popular and effective services in the world today for global communications, and we are excited to be adding a high-value multilingual communication capability for Skype users. Moka Chat for Skype is the ideal translation solution for a community with such a vast multilingual user base”, said the President and Cofounder of the company, Diego Winegardner.
